The Montana Defensive Pistol Association is dedicated to helping shooters train to improve their skill level when carrying a concealed pistol or revolver. We believe that one of the best ways to conduct such training is by holding competitive "matches" in which shooters using similar equipment are grouped into a specific category and compete against other shooters in their category. The vast majority of our shooters are intent on improving their skills and are NOT interested in their scores or in "winning" for the sake of winning. For this reason, our Match Rules may be viewed as liberal when compared with the rules for the major, formal, handgun-shooting sports in the U.S., such as the U.S. Practical Shooting Association or the International Defensive Pistol Association.
Nevertheless, it is extremely important that individual shooters follow our match rules closely. Safety rules especially are unyielding. Moreover, any shooter violating the intent of our matches in order to place higher in the standings for a particular match is subject to being penalized for a Failure To Do Right and will be given a penalty that will ensure the shooter's score is quite bad relative to the other shooters. Additionally, any shooter can be disqualified by the Squad Officer or the Match Director for any breach of safety rules or conduct unbecoming a responsible armed citizen.
Some of our shooters attend MDPA matches primarily for the sport of competitive "defensive pistol" shooting, in which they have fun completing a difficult course of fire in the briefest time with the fewest misses or penalties. Many of these shooters are USPSA members or IDPA members and compete at sanctioned matches around the country. We urge serious shooters to also consider joining one of those organizations, in order to be able to attend sanctioned matches with the highest caliber competition, to participate in forums dedicated to the shooting sports, and to subscribe to the informative magazines published by these entities.
MDPA is for all our shooters to develop their defensive handgun skills while having fun.
