The Montana Defensive Pistol Association (MDPA) is dedicated to the development and practice of defensive handgun skills. The MDPA provides a safe environment and practical defensive shooting problems in which to learn and practice using your personal handgun. You will develop safe gun handling, accurate shooting and quick reactions. MDPA places the highest priority on safety. Safe gun handling rules are strictly enforced. All loading, firing, and unloading of firearms is under the close supervision of a Squad Officer (SO). The SO is there to help you, to answer any questions, and keep you and all others at the range safe. Another aspect of safety is the risk you are exposed to in a defensive shooting situation. MDPA develops and practices the skills to minimize this risk. You will learn and practice how to shoot while moving, which targets to shoot first, and how to use cover. Accuracy is practice. MDPA practices shooting from a variety of positions, with both hands or either hand on the gun, while moving or standing still, and in the light or dark. MDPA shooters will typically fire about 100 rounds through eight or ten different shooting problems. Targets will be set at varying distances and some may be only partially exposed or set next to “no-shoot targets.” A quick reaction to a defensive shooting situation comes from experience (another word for practice) and confidence in your ability. As you gain both you will shoot through these problems with increasing speed and accuracy. MDPA provides many different shooting situations to test your abilities and add to your experience. Some of our targets are moving. Sometimes the shooter is required to move between firing positions or while firing. All shooting is done under time pressure for added realism. There is a big difference between leaning to shoot a handgun and learning how to use a handgun for defense. If you own a handgun for defense you have an obligation to yourself and others to learn and practice to use it safely, accurately, and quickly. MDPA welcomes all new shooters regardless of experience. MDPA will hold New Shooter Orientation and Qualification classes though out the year. You must be over 18 years of age, sign a liability waiver and have the following equipment: a pistol or revolver of 9mm or .38 caliber or larger, at least 50 rounds of ammunition, two extra magazines or three speed loaders, a holster, ammo carrier(s), and eye and hearing protection. (We have special rules for shooters 12-18 years of age. Please check out the Youth Shooter Policy section.)
